Social media is full of false and inflammatory statements, fake news articles, and AI generated content. This Cause is all about identifying and debunking that disinformation so people who see it on social media know it's false.
Some of the people posting misinformation don't know what they are saying isn't true, but most of it is posted by bad actors and bot networks intentionally creating confusion, undermining democracy, stopping people from making good choices, and pushing society toward extremes.
Important Note: There are lots of false claims on social media that don't actively harm anyone. If someone is claiming that the wrong team won the World Cup, no one is harmed by hearing it, and that's not the kind of thing this Cause is about.
This Cause is about identifying and subverting false claims that actively create harm. Some examples include:
- Someone claiming that vaccines cause autism (proven false and harmful because it leads to fewer parents vaccinating their kids and more children dying of preventable diseases)
- A post stating that the 2020 US election was stolen (proven false and subverts trust in the democratic process)
- A claim that the world will end by 2030 from climate change (not supported by any serious peer-reviewed paper, and makes people feel fatalistic and hopeless)
If you join this cause, hit the Share with Cause Amp button when you see disinformation on social media to let other members of the Cause know. In return, you'll receive notifications to help debunk disinformation (e.g., to make a prewritten comment in response to a false claim, or to like a comment debunking a false claim and push it to the top).
As with all causes on Cause Amp, please let us know if you're interested in volunteering to do more (like reviewing submissions and drafting comments for others) by emailing us at info@causeamp.org.
